Emergency & Exit Lighting FAQs
What is the difference between emergency lights and exit lights?
Emergency lights provide illumination when the normal supply fails, helping people move along escape routes, stairs, corridors and other required areas. Illuminated exit signs identify an exit or show the direction to it. Both need to operate correctly under emergency conditions.
Does my commercial building need emergency and exit lighting?
Requirements depend on the building classification, layout, size and use, along with the applicable building approvals and documents. The National Construction Code and AS/NZS 2293 provisions may apply, and some WA public buildings have additional requirements. We can inspect the electrical installation and discuss the scope; formal building design or compliance advice may be needed for larger or unusual sites.
Which standard applies to emergency lighting?
The AS/NZS 2293 series covers emergency escape lighting and exit signs, including design and installation, routine service and equipment. The applicable edition and adopted requirements need to be confirmed for the particular building and project.
How often should emergency and exit lights be tested?
Six-monthly testing is commonly associated with routine service under AS/NZS 2293.2. The full testing and maintenance scope depends on the system and the applicable standard. We can help plan scheduled maintenance around your property’s requirements.
Why test lights that appear to be working?
Normal mains operation or a green indicator does not prove that a battery, charging system or emergency function will work during an outage. Testing checks actual emergency operation and can reveal faults that are otherwise hidden.
How long should emergency lights operate during a test?
The required duration depends on the provisions adopted for the installation. Many conventional installations are commonly associated with a 90-minute discharge test, but this should not be assumed for every system. Confirm the applicable requirements for the building and equipment.
What happens if a fitting fails its test?
We investigate the fault and explain whether the fitting needs a battery, repair or replacement, or whether the supply or wiring needs further attention. Failed fittings should be followed up through an agreed rectification process, with records updated for the work completed.
Can you replace individual lights or upgrade fluorescent fittings to LED?
Yes. Individual emergency lights and exit signs can often be replaced without replacing the entire system. LED equipment may be suitable for ageing fluorescent fittings. We assess the application and existing installation before recommending replacement equipment.
Do you test and install illuminated exit signs?
Yes. We test, repair, replace and install illuminated exit signs as well as emergency lights. New installations need appropriate location and visibility, based on the building layout and applicable drawings or specifications.
Can you install lights for a new fit-out or changed layout?
Yes. We work with builders, business owners and property managers on new installations and alterations. Changing walls, exits or how a space is used can affect the required layout. Larger or unusual projects may need a building design or compliance professional in addition to electrical installation work.
Do you maintain strata common areas and multiple properties?
Yes. We support common corridors, stairs, car parks and other relevant strata areas, as well as offices, retail premises, warehouses and other commercial properties. We can coordinate testing, reporting, approvals and rectification across multiple sites.
Will I receive testing records or an asset report?
Reporting and record requirements should be agreed before the visit. Tell us if you have an asset register, an existing maintenance record or a particular report format. We can then confirm what is included in the scope and how defects and repairs will be recorded.
Can failed fittings be repaired during the same visit?
That depends on the faults found, access, equipment availability and the agreed scope. We can discuss an approved minor repair limit before testing, or provide a separate quote for rectification where required.
Can emergency lighting be included with other electrical maintenance?
Yes. We can coordinate the work with broader commercial electrical support, including lighting repairs, RCD testing, test and tag, fault finding and other maintenance. Tell us what your property needs so we can agree a practical combined scope.
