Know What’s Protecting
Your Home
LEO Electrical assesses existing alarms, replaces ageing or faulty units and installs new alarms where needed. If an alarm is chirping, damaged, painted over, failing its test or approaching 10 years old, we can help determine the next step.
Preparing to sell or rent, renovating, or unsure about alarms in a home you’ve just bought? We check the age, condition, location and power arrangement, then explain what is suitable for your property. A beep from the test button doesn’t tell you everything about an alarm’s condition or remaining service life.

Residential Smoke Alarm FAQs
How long do smoke alarms last?
Smoke alarms have a service life of up to 10 years and may have an earlier expiry date. For WA dwellings being sold, rented or hired, alarms must not be more than 10 years old or have reached their expiry date. If you’re unsure of an alarm’s age, we can check it during the visit.
Do smoke alarms need to be hard-wired in WA?
For homes subject to WA sale, rent or hire requirements, smoke alarms generally need to be permanently connected to mains power. Limited exceptions apply where the required wiring cannot practicably be installed. We assess the property before recommending the appropriate solution.
Do I need an electrician to replace a hard-wired smoke alarm?
Yes. Connecting or disconnecting a mains-powered smoke alarm is electrical work and must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor in Western Australia.
Do smoke alarms need to be interconnected?
It depends on the building and when its building permit application was lodged. For relevant residential buildings with more than one required alarm, interconnection applies to permit applications lodged on or after 1 May 2015. Older homes being sold, rented or hired still need compliant alarms, but interconnection is not automatically required solely because of the sale or tenancy. We assess what applies to your home.
Why should smoke alarms be interconnected?
Interconnection lets an alarm detecting smoke in one area activate the other connected alarms. This can provide warning to people further away, particularly overnight and in larger or multi-storey homes.
Can you install wireless interconnected smoke alarms?
Wireless interconnection may be suitable where physical interconnection cabling is impractical. We assess the property and applicable requirements before recommending it. Wireless communication between alarms does not remove mains-power requirements where those apply.
My smoke alarm beeps when tested. Does it need replacing?
Possibly. The test button is useful, but age, expiry date, condition, power arrangement and suitability also matter. An alarm that has reached the end of its service life can still need replacement even if the test button produces a sound.
Why is my smoke alarm chirping?
Depending on the model, chirping may indicate a battery issue, fault or end-of-life warning. We can inspect the alarm and determine whether servicing or replacement is needed, rather than repeatedly changing batteries without identifying the cause.
Can you replace all the smoke alarms in my home at once?
Yes. If several alarms are the same age, replacing them together can make sense and provide a clear starting point for their future replacement cycle. We still assess the existing installation before recommending the scope.
I’m selling my house. Can you check the smoke alarms?
Yes. We can inspect existing alarms, identify the work required and carry out smoke alarm electrical installation or replacement before the sale. The requirements depend on the dwelling and installation, so we assess the property before confirming the scope.
Do you install battery-only smoke alarms?
Battery-only alarms are suitable in some circumstances, but cannot replace mains-powered alarms wherever mains power is required. A permitted alternative may be available where there is no hidden space for wiring and no suitable alternative location. Other circumstances may require local government approval. We assess the appropriate option for your property.
Where should smoke alarms be installed?
Locations depend on the home’s layout and applicable building requirements. Sleeping areas, the paths between bedrooms and the rest of the home, and additional levels are important considerations. We determine suitable locations as part of new installation work.
Can you test smoke alarms without replacing them?
Yes, where testing existing alarms is the requested scope. If an alarm is expired, faulty or otherwise needs attention, we explain what we’ve found and recommend the appropriate next step.
